Regulation Made Simple

New research on initiatives against handset theft in the Americas

20-12-2017

Our latest research provides an overview of the different legal/regulatory measures against mobile handset theft in the Americas.

Handset theft

All American countries researched have initiatives to prevent handset theft. In Canada, Costa Rica and the United States there are only industry initiatives in place, while in the other surveyed countries there are legal obligations and rules to manage blacklisted IMEIs (International Mobile Equipment Identity) databases.

Colombia and Ecuador have also implemented 'whitelists' registering all the IMEIs that can be used in the country. Besides, most countries exchange information on stolen handsets with other countries (part of a specific trade block or under bilateral cooperation agreements) or share and use the information from GSMA's international database.
